You People | feat. Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill | Official Trailer | Netflix
If you think you’ve had the most uncomfortable dinner conversation with your partner’s family, think again. The trailer for Kenya Barris’ feature directorial debut, You People, is here, and it’s brilliantly awkward with all kinds of comedic genius.
Kicking things off with a messy meet-cute between Ezra Cohen (Jonah Hill) and Amira Mohammed (Lauren London), You People’s trailer spirals into the couple’s many tribulations as an interracial and interfaith pair.
Amira’s parents, played by comedy legends Eddie Murphy and Nia Long, are distraught by their daughter’s decision to date an archetypal white boy, who is desperate to impress. Meanwhile, Ezra’s parents, played by legends Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny, are adamant about projecting “progressive” family — but are dropping microaggressions that they think are complements.
Taking a well-deserved jab at our modern mores and social taboos, You People already seems like a gem of dark comedy. Then, its trailer ends with by far the most awkward dinner conversation I’ve ever heard. Just check it out for yourself.
You People premieres on Netflix Jan. 27.
