Whoopi Goldberg Is Pleading for Maggie Smith to Return in Sister Act 3

Whoopi Goldberg says she's trying to get Maggie Smith to return as Mother Superior to round out the cast for Sister Act 3.
If Whoopi Goldberg gets her way, she'll reunite with Maggie Smith in Sister Act 3. In the first two Sister Act films, Smith memorably appeared in the role of Mother Superior opposite Goldberg's Deloris Van Cartier, aka Sister Mary Clarence. A third installment is in the works, with Goldberg and other original cast members set to return, but there's been no indication that Smith will be involved at this time.
That's something that Goldberg is looking to change. Per People, Goldberg appeared on the British talk show Loose Women and revealed how she's waiting to get Smith on board before moving forward with production. Looking directly at the camera, she made a public plea for Smith to join her in the threequel, adding that she'll do whatever it takes to make the appearance possible.
"I want to let Maggie Smith know that I'm holding the part of Mother Superior for you, because I just can't do it with anybody but you," Goldberg stated. "So, if you need me to come over here and shoot it and do whatever we have to do, we will do whatever you want us to do. But we don't want to do it without you, Maggie."
It's not unrealistic for Smith, 88, to appear in the film. She is still active and just recently reprised her Downton Abbey role in last year's Downton Abbey: A New Era. Smith is also attached to the upcoming films The Miracle Club and A German Life. It would seem that a cameo in Sister Act 3 will depend entirely upon how Smith feels about revisiting that role at this stage of her career, 30 years after saying goodbye to that character.
Sister Act 3 Is Coming Together
Goldberg has previously teased the return of Kathy Najimy as well as some of the former child stars seen in the second movie. In addition to returning cast members, Goldberg also says she wants to get Nope star Keke Palmer and Lizzo on board for the sequel as well. Tyler Perry is producing the film with Goldberg, and Tim Federle is directing. "The script is being written, and I am the producer on it - not directing. We brought on an incredible director [Tim Federle] and Whoopi's really excited," Perry said of the film in a THR interview. "I think that this is just what the country needs. We need that feel-good moment in the movies where you go, 'Oh my God, I left there singing.' That's my hope."
